India's 'miracle' biofuel crop: too good to be true?
New Delhi (AFP) Jan 27, 2010
To its fans, jatropha is a miracle crop, an eco-friendly answer to India's growing energy needs, but some experts are starting to question whether the wonder-shrub is too good to be true. The seeds of the wild plant, which grows abundantly across India, produce non-edible oil that can be blended with diesel, to make the biofuel that is part of government efforts to cut carbon emissions and combat climate change. That, combined with the shrub's much vaunted ability to flourish on poorly irrigated ... read more

Brazil's ethanol-fueled plant on stream
Rio De Janeiro (UPI) Jan 21, 2009
Brazil has inaugurated its first commercial ethanol-fueled power plant amid questions being asked about the global impact of increased feedstock production on food agriculture. The ethanol used in the plant comes from sugarcane, but other biofuels being researched for ecologically friendly attributes or all-weather use are using huge quantities of soy, sunflower and other oil seeds. Although most of the crops used in feedstock for fuels are grown specifically for the purpose, analysts s ... read more

Biofuel Crop Miscanthus Can Host Western Corn Rootworm
Champaign IL (SPX) Jan 12, 2010
The western corn rootworm beetle, a pest that feasts on corn roots and corn silk and costs growers more than $1 billion annually in the U.S., also can survive on the perennial grass Miscanthus x giganteus, a potential biofuels crop that would likely be grown alongside corn, researchers report. Rootworm beetle larvae can survive to adulthood on Miscanthus rhizomes, and adult beetles will lay their eggs at the base of Miscanthus plants grown near cornfields, the researchers found. Their st ... read more
