New Process Yields High-Energy-Density, Plant-Based Transportation Fuel
Madison WI (SPX) Mar 01, 2010
A team of University of Wisconsin-Madison engineers has developed a highly efficient, environmentally friendly process that selectively converts gamma-valerolactone, a biomass derivative, into the chemical equivalent of jet fuel. The simple process preserves about 95 percent of the energy from the original biomass, requires little hydrogen input, and captures carbon dioxide under high pressure for future beneficial use. With James Dumesic, Steenbock Professor of Chemical and Biological Engin ... read more

GreeNow Can Burn Alternative Fuel In Sub-Freezing Weather
New York NY (SPX) Feb 10, 2010
GreeNow has announced a technological breakthrough which enables its generator engines to power outdoor events through the winter. Knowing at low temperatures that pure biodiesel can become gelatinous and difficult to burn, the GreeNow team developed a customized, state-of-the-art heating system for its generators and fuel tanks. The result: Even as the January weather pushes the mercury b ... more

Microbe produces biofuel from biomass
Berkeley, Calif. (UPI) Jan 28, 2009
U.S. scientists say they have developed a microbe that can produce an advanced biofuel directly from biomass. Scientists led by Jay Keasling from the U.S. Department of Energy's Joint BioEnergy Institute said using synthetic biology they engineered a strain of Escherichia coli bacteria to produce biodiesel fuel and other chemicals derived from fatty acids. "The fact that our microbes can produce a diesel fuel directly from biomass with no additional chemical modifications is exciting and ... read more
