Washington ethanol offer scrapped
Washington (UPI) May 28, 2010
A Memorial Day discount of 54 cent-a-gallon on ethanol planned by the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association in the U.S. capital was scrapped due to unspecified "political" influences, the industry group said. The purpose of the promotion, at two Capitol Hill Exxon gas stations, was to draw attention to the 54 cent-per-gallon tariff on imported ethanol, the Brazilian association, known as UNICA, said. Eliminating the tariff, UNICA maintains, would help reduce price volatility in the et ... read more

Biofuel-run Navy flight to mark Earth Day
St. Louis (UPI) Apr 21, 2010
A biofuel-powered flight of Boeing's F/A-18F Super Hornet will mark Earth Day Thursday, being observed worldwide with millions of "green" acts aimed to raise awareness of climate change. The unmodified aircraft will take off from Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md., and will be powered by a sustainable biofuel blend of 50 percent camelina and 50 percent JP-5 aviation fuel, said the Bo ... more

Food Vs Fuel: Growing Grain For Food More Energy Efficient
East Lansing MI (SPX) Apr 21, 2010
Using productive farmland to grow crops for food instead of fuel is more energy efficient, Michigan State University scientists concluded, after analyzing 17 years' worth of data to help settle the food versus fuel debate. "It's 36 percent more efficient to grow grain for food than for fuel," said Ilya Gelfand, an MSU postdoctoral researcher and lead author of the study. "The ideal is to g ... more

Expanding Options And Identifying Obstacles Of Cellulosic Ethanol
Washington DC (SPX) Apr 14, 2010
Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists are figuring out how to turn wheat straw into ethanol "gold," and learning more about the bacteria that can "infect" ethanol plants and interfere with fuel production. At the ARS National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research (NCAUR) in Peoria, Ill., ARS chemist Badal Saha conducted a 5-year study that examined whether wheat straw-a crop residue left over after the grain has been harvested-could have commercial potential for cellulosic ethanol ... read more
